How the Markup calculation works
Selling price = cost x (1 + markup %)
A 50% markup on a $60 cost gives a $90 price and $30 of profit. That same $30 is a 33.3% margin, because margin divides by the price.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate markup?
Subtract the cost from the selling price, divide by the cost and multiply by 100. An item bought for $60 and sold for $90 has a 50% markup.
Is markup the same as margin?
No. Markup is profit as a share of cost; margin is profit as a share of price. A 50% markup is a 33.3% margin, and a 100% markup is a 50% margin. Use the margin calculator to work from margin.
