How the Tip calculation works
Tip = bill x tip % / 100; each person pays (bill + tip) / people
In US restaurants with table service, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is customary. A quick mental check: move the decimal one place left for 10%, then double it for 20%.
Frequently asked questions
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Convention is to tip on the pre-tax subtotal, though many people tip on the full total for simplicity. The difference on a $60 bill with 8% tax is under a dollar at 18%.
How do I calculate a tip?
Multiply the bill by the tip percentage as a decimal. A 20% tip on a $60 bill is $12, for a total of $72.
How do I work out a tip in my head?
Move the decimal point one place left to get 10%, then double it for 20%. On a $47.50 bill, 10% is $4.75 and 20% is $9.50. For 15%, add half of the 10% figure to it.
How much should I tip?
In US sit-down restaurants, 15% to 20% of the bill before tax is standard, and more for excellent service. Customs differ in other countries, where service may already be included.
