How the Sales Tax calculation works

Total = price x (1 + tax rate / 100); pre-tax price = total / (1 + tax rate / 100)

US sales tax is set by states, counties and cities, so the combined rate depends on where the sale takes place. Five states have no statewide sales tax.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate sales tax?

Multiply the price by the tax rate as a decimal. An $80 purchase at 7.5% has $6.00 of tax, for a total of $86.00.

How do I take sales tax off a total?

Divide the total by 1 plus the tax rate. A total of $107.50 that includes 7.5% tax was $100.00 before tax, because 107.50 / 1.075 = 100.

Which states have no sales tax?

Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon have no statewide sales tax. Some local governments in Alaska charge their own.
