How the Currency Converter calculation works
Reference rates are mid-market figures. Banks, card networks and exchange counters add a margin, typically 1% to 4%, so the rate you receive will be slightly less favorable.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a currency conversion?
Multiply the amount by the exchange rate. If one US dollar buys 0.92 euros, $500 converts to 460 euros. To go the other way, divide by the rate.
Why is the rate I get different from the rate shown?
Converters show the mid-market rate, the midpoint between buying and selling prices. Banks, card issuers and exchange counters add a margin or a fee on top, so the rate you actually receive is a little worse.
How often do exchange rates change?
Market rates move constantly while currency markets are open. The European Central Bank reference rates used here are published once each working day.
