How the Cash Runway calculation works
Runway in months = cash / (monthly expenses - monthly revenue)
$250,000 in the bank with $65,000 of expenses and $40,000 of revenue means a net burn of $25,000 a month and a runway of 10 months.
Frequently asked questions
What is burn rate?
The cash a business uses each month. Gross burn is total monthly spending; net burn subtracts revenue. Runway is calculated from net burn.
How much runway should a startup have?
Investors commonly advise 12 to 18 months after a funding round, and starting the next raise with at least 6 months left, since fundraising takes time.
