How the SIP calculation works
FV = P x ((1 + i)^n - 1) / i x (1 + i)
P is the monthly investment, i the monthly return and n the number of months. Contributions are assumed to be made at the start of each month. A step-up raises the monthly amount once a year.
Frequently asked questions
Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No. Mutual fund returns vary with the market. The figure shown assumes a constant rate for illustration.
How do I calculate SIP returns?
Use FV = P x ((1 + i)^n - 1) / i x (1 + i), where P is the monthly amount, i the monthly return and n the number of months. Investing 5,000 a month for 10 years at 12% a year grows to about 1,161,695.
What is a SIP?
A systematic investment plan puts a fixed amount into a mutual fund at regular intervals, usually monthly. Buying steadily means you buy more units when prices are low and fewer when they are high.
How much SIP do I need to reach 1 crore?
At an assumed 12% yearly return, about 19,800 a month for 15 years reaches 1 crore (10 million). A longer period needs much less each month. Returns from market investments are not guaranteed.
