How the Daily Compound Interest calculation works
Balance = principal x (1 + daily rate)^days
Small daily percentages compound into very large annual figures: 0.5% a day is more than 500% a year. Results at that level are illustrations of the arithmetic, not realistic expectations for an investment.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert an annual rate to a daily rate?
Divide the APR by 365. A 5% APR is roughly 0.0137% a day.
How do I calculate daily compound interest?
Use A = P x (1 + r / 365)^(365 x t). $10,000 at 5% compounded daily for one year grows to $10,512.67.
Is daily compounding better than monthly?
Slightly. On $10,000 at 5% for a year, daily compounding earns $512.67 and monthly compounding earns $511.62. The rate and the length of time matter far more than how often interest is added.
How is daily interest worked out on a credit card?
Divide the APR by 365 for the daily rate and multiply by the balance. At 24% APR the daily rate is about 0.0658%, so a $2,000 balance costs roughly $1.32 a day.
