How the Investment calculation works

Real value = ending balance / (1 + inflation)^years

Returns are compounded monthly. The inflation-adjusted figure shows what the ending balance would buy at today's prices.

Frequently asked questions

What is a realistic rate of return?

US large-company stocks have returned roughly 10% a year before inflation over the long run, with wide variation from year to year. Bonds and cash have returned less.

How do I calculate the return on an investment?

Subtract what you put in from what it is worth now, divide by what you put in and multiply by 100. An investment that grows from $10,000 to $12,500 has returned 25%.

How much will my investment be worth in 10 years?

It depends on the return. $10,000 growing at 7% a year, compounded annually, becomes about $19,672 in 10 years. Enter your own amount, contributions and rate above.

How much do I need to invest each month to reach $1 million?

At a 7% yearly return, investing $500 a month reaches $1 million in about 36 years, and $1,000 a month gets there in about 27 and a half years. Starting earlier matters more than the exact amount.
