How the Future Value calculation works
FV = PV x (1 + r / n)^(n x t)
PV is the present value, r the annual rate, n the compounding periods per year and t the years. For the reverse calculation use the present value calculator.
Frequently asked questions
What is the time value of money?
It is the principle that money available now is worth more than the same amount later, because it can earn a return in the meantime.
How do I calculate future value?
Use FV = PV x (1 + r)^n, where PV is the amount today, r the rate per period and n the number of periods. $5,000 at 6% a year for 10 years has a future value of $8,954.24.
How do I calculate future value in Excel?
Use =FV(rate, periods, payment, present value). For $5,000 at 6% for 10 years, enter =FV(0.06, 10, 0, -5000). The present value is entered as a negative number because it is money paid out.
What is the future value of an annuity?
It is the value of a series of equal payments at the end of the term: FV = payment x ((1 + r)^n - 1) / r. Paying in $1,000 a year for 10 years at 6% builds to $13,180.79.
