How the FIRE Number calculation works
FIRE number = yearly spending / withdrawal rate
Spending $50,000 a year with a 4% withdrawal rate needs $1,250,000, or 25 times yearly spending. Starting at 30 with $150,000 invested and adding $30,000 a year at a 5% return after inflation, that is reached in 19 years, at age 49.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my FIRE number?
Divide your expected yearly spending by your withdrawal rate. At 4%, that is the same as multiplying by 25: $50,000 a year needs $1,250,000.
What is the 4% rule?
Research on historical returns found that a portfolio could sustain withdrawals of 4% of its starting value, adjusted for inflation, for about 30 years. For an early retirement lasting longer, many planners use 3% to 3.5%.
