How the Savings Withdrawal calculation works

Balance next month = balance x (1 + monthly return) - withdrawal

If the monthly withdrawal is smaller than the monthly growth, the balance never declines. Otherwise the table shows the balance at the end of each year until it is exhausted.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 4% rule?

It is a retirement guideline suggesting that withdrawing 4% of a portfolio in the first year, then adjusting for inflation, has historically lasted about 30 years. It is a starting point rather than a guarantee.

How do I calculate how long my savings will last?

Enter your balance, the amount you take out each month and the return you expect. The calculator subtracts each withdrawal, adds the interest earned on what remains, and counts the months until the balance runs out.

How long will $500,000 last if I withdraw $3,000 a month?

About 23 years and 9 months if the balance earns 5% a year. With no growth at all it would last just under 14 years.
