How the Retirement calculation works

Balance at retirement = savings grown monthly at the expected return, plus contributions

The income line applies a 4% first-year withdrawal rate to the projected balance. The inflation-adjusted figures express the same amounts in today's buying power, which is the more useful number for planning.

Returns are assumed to be constant. Real markets are not, so treat the result as a midpoint rather than a forecast.

Frequently asked questions

How much do I need to retire?

A common rule of thumb is 25 times your expected yearly spending in retirement, which corresponds to a 4% withdrawal rate.

What return should I assume?

Many planners use 5% to 7% a year for a diversified portfolio before inflation. A lower assumption gives a more cautious plan.

How much should I have saved for retirement by my age?

One widely quoted rule of thumb is one times your salary saved by 30, three times by 40, six times by 50, eight times by 60 and ten times by 67. These are rough markers; your own target depends on the lifestyle you plan.

How do I estimate my retirement income?

Add what your savings can provide to your other income. A common starting point is to withdraw about 4% of your savings each year: $800,000 gives roughly $32,000. Then add Social Security and any pension.

At what age can I retire?

You can retire whenever your savings allow. In the US, penalty-free withdrawals from most retirement accounts start at 59 and a half, Social Security can be claimed from 62 at a reduced amount, and full Social Security retirement age is 67 for people born in 1960 or later.
