How the Credit Utilization calculation works
Utilization = total card balances / total credit limits x 100
Balances of $1,200 and $300 on limits of $5,000 and $3,000 give an overall utilization of 18.8%. Paying off $700 would bring it to 10%.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good credit utilization ratio?
Under 30% is the usual guideline, and under 10% is associated with the best scores. Utilization has no memory in most scoring models, so paying balances down improves it as soon as the new balance is reported.
Does paying off a card every month give 0% utilization?
Not necessarily. Issuers report the balance on your statement date. If you want a lower reported figure, pay before the statement closes.
